OpenAI is rolling out a significant update for ChatGPT that will enable the chatbot to engage in two-way voice conversations with users and interact using images.
To put it simply, the new features will bring ChatGPT closer to widely-used personal AI assistants like Apple’s Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Microsoft Cortana. Although, its new features preliminarily seem to have wider functionality.
OpenAI highlighted that the voice feature will open up possibilities for various creative and accessibility-focused applications.
Similar AI services which are usually called “voice assistants” are typically integrated into devices and serve functions like setting alarms, delivering internet-based information, and providing reminders.
ChatGPT’s new voice capability will allow it to narrate stories, conduct discussions and debates, or simply to vocalize text input from users. According to OpenAI, the same technology is already being used by Spotify to facilitate podcast translation into different languages.
With image support, users will be able to capture images of objects or scenes and ask ChatGPT to troubleshoot various technical issues, identify fridge contents for meal planning, or analyze complex graphs and other kinds of visual information for work-related data insights.
Currently, Google Lens is a popular choice for obtaining information from images, so now ChatGPT will directly compete with Google Lens, too.
The enhanced features of ChatGPT will become available to subscribers of its Plus and Enterprise plans within the next two weeks.
